Campus Visit Notes for Barnard College
Overall, I was very disappointed with my visit at Barnard. The rain might have had something to do with it, but I got a very cold and negative vibe from Barnard.
I'd like to elaborate on the information session, because that played a huge factor in my overall experience there. It was, frankly, the worst information session I have ever attended. It only lasted half an hour. The admissions counselor seemed very impatient to get the session over with and talked very fast. She didn't give an outline of what she was going to talk about and stopped at random sections for questions. The audience didn't know what to ask in case she was going to talk about it later. When I spoke with her privately, I felt such a strong air of condescension. She answered my questions very briefly and again, seemed very impatient. When I asked her what are some organizations students like to be involved in, she told me that I can't join the clubs everyone else does and need to find my interests. I was rather offended, since I asked a question to get a general sense of what students value, not because I can't think for myself.
The campus itself was another turn-off. Again, it may be the rain, but everything looked old and gray. The main entrance is far less grand than shown in the pictures. It was so small that we almost drove past without seeing it. The lawn where students get together is also tiny. While Barnard says that it gives students access to NYC and provides a warm refuge from the city, I feel that it does a worse job on the latter. There doesn't seem to be enough room on campus to find any sort of peace.
