Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - my student interviewer seemed taken aback that i could speak in complete sentences. she kept talking about her favorite tv shows...but i think i impressed her.

Information Session: Yes - i was there for a summer program, and one day at lunch a woman came and gave a quick info session for interested students. mostly she talked about financial aid, but i enjoyed it.

Campus Tour: Yes - not officially, but like i said, i lived there for a week. its very small and pretty easy to learn/find your way around the main campus. its a great little haven in NYC.

Classroom Visit: Yes - i took an anthropology class, and loved the professor. the classrooms felt a lot like high school classrooms, but the academic environment was great.

Campus:

Friendliness/Courtesy of Students:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
all of our RA's were current students, and they were very talkative and helpful. one girl patiently answered questions about her HS gpa and chanced people. orientation was fun, too, not boring.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:

all of the staff working on our program were enthusiastic about barnard. they were great to be around.

Appearance of Campus:

everything was beautiful, clean, and in good repair. the elevators in barnard hall are sloooow though. just take the stairs!

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
while i was there, they were in the process of building the new student center, so i had to take a huge, complicated detour every day to get to milford hall (classroom building).

Dormitories:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
the dorm rooms are all the same, at least in sulz where i was. broadway is noisy at night, so hope you get a courtyard room if you're a light sleeper.

Security/Safety:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
the dorms are very tightly secured. no ID pass, no entrance. i felt very safe about that. there was a guard at the front gate at all times, but he just seemed to let anyone/everyone walk by.

Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
i loved my program, i loved barnard, and i almost decided to apply ED!

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:

uhm, NYC, hello? the subway is right outside the gates, and columbia is right across the street.

Campus Visit Notes for Barnard College

Visit Description:

a couple of things:

one, its difficult (in my opinion) to get off the west side. the 1 (local stop train) is the only train that goes up to columbia, so you have to switch at 96th street if you want to take the express. the 1,2, and 3 go all the way up and down the west side, but switching to the east side is infinitely more complicated. im sure barnard girls figure it out, but i was only there for a week!

two, a quick anecdote: the closest movie theater we could find (harry potter was released while i was there!) was on 84th street. now, the train stops at 86th street. we had to RUN two blocks in the pouring rain. moral of the story: dont leave barnard when its raining unless you absolutely have to, or just dont mind getting soaked. also, the lincoln center movie theaters were a lot nicer, but harder to find once we got off the train. (as in, we walked around the block like four times.)

three, the AC in the basement of sulz was broken, and using the computers downstairs was hellish.

overall, i LOOOOVE barnard. it was an amazing visit. if the city life is for you, barnard is the best it has to offer.

Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:

we stayed midtown and saw some broadway shows before my mom left me at barnard.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:

anything/everything you could possibly want or imagine!

Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):

cabs to both airports are easy to get right outside the gates, and have fixed rates. the subway provides easy access to grand central and port authority.
