Campus Visit Notes for Bowdoin College
Every summer, my family makes an 8 hour trek to stay at our favorite, tiny island off the coast of Maine. And every year, when we drive through Brunswick, I make sure to wake up just to catch a glimpse Bowdoin. I've been dreamily gazing at the school my whole life and so this summer, we finally took a tour.
I went in with high expectations and Bowdoin lived up to them 100%. Although small, the campus is gorgeous, friendly, and cultured. There is a range of beautiful architecture from 18th century school houses to modern-day underground museums. My favorite building was Coles Tower, though. Our tour guide made sure to proudly include that the sixteen-story building was the tallest building in Maine for a very long time- something my New Yorker family and I had to giggle at.
Bowdoin also has a relatively unknown nature side. Almost directly adjacent and across from the school are beautifully preserved forests owned by the school. There's also a marine biology center on a nearby island. Our family took a hike through the center's land and its beautiful. There are plenty of paths and maps encouraging you to explore and I'd recommend you do so if your family is into the outdoors!
Finally, even if you're not that interested in the school, I'd stop by for the museum. There's always an art exhibit going on and it's constantly changing. From the art section you can continue upstairs to see some really beautiful ancient art and artifacts from Byzantine, Greek, and Victorian eras.
All in all, (as you may have gathered) I found Bowdoin amazing. I definitely recommend a visit!!
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Don't forget to ask the front desk about sampling the cafetaria food. I believe you can get a free meal ticket with your tour. And you'll def want to try the food- Bowdoin is number one for
