Carleton College Visit Report by Youdon'tsay
Admissions Interview: No - Ds already had been admitted and visited previously over the summer. He had his interview then.
Information Session: Yes - I was the only one there so was able to ask lots of direct, personal questions about diversity, etc. Not sure what the typical info session is like.
Campus Tour: Yes - Again, it was one on one. Tour guide was candid because of that. We talked a lot about the drinking policy as I saw a sign posted about a recent mtg to discuss "the drinking issue."
Classroom Visit: Yes - He went to two. Enjoyed them well enough. Commented that there were no minorites in first class, which struck him as odd.
Campus Visit Notes for Carleton College
I'm being chased off the computer and so can't complete this section as I would like, but, overall, my impressions were incredibly positive. Being a minority, I worried a bit about those numbers, but while eating in Burton, I saw tons of diversity. I know recruiting minorities at a Minnesota LAC must be difficult, but everything I heard and overheard indicated a real commitment to diversity, which is important to me.
Students looked happy, engaged, not cookie-cutter.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Tavern was quite delicious and had a fairly extensive menu. I had stir fry; ds had a burger. For dinner, I walked to the Quarterback Club, local institution, for a carryout burger combo. Yum.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Used Ecotrans one way, the shuttle the other way. Both were clean, efficient. Ecotrans driver was worth the price as he was a wealth of knowledge about the college and community. We lucked out there!
