Campus Tour: Yes - Current student showed us the outside of most of the campus buildings but not too many interiors. Did not see athletic or recreation facilities or seminar rooms.

Campus:

Can only comment on tour guide since there weren't many students on campus. She was an African American student from out of state. She was smart, articulate and enthusiastic about her school choi

Admissions rep who gave info session was friendly and relaxed.

Appearance of Campus:

Quirky - campus has multiple architectural styles and appears to have been randomly added to over the years. Space does not suggest any master plan or design. Most green space is in outlying arboreum

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:

Dormitories:

Variety of dorm spaces - singles, doubles and triples. Some older buildings with character. Some suites. Some shared college owned houses. Coed floors, no freshman only dorms, all multi-age.

Security/Safety:

Seems good but probably not as good as at St Olaf since campus has multiple entrances and is not clearly defined. Bikes were locked here.

Overall Campus Impression:
2 - Fair

There was no place where you could stand and see all the buildings. Difficult to get a sense of the overall campus. A great deal of renovation was going on.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:
3 - Good
3 - Good
Campus borders are not clearly defined because college owns older homes adjacent to campus buildings. These house specialty housing, offices etc. Could clearly hear the nearby train. Frequent trains.

City/Town/Community:
3 - Good

Close vicinity is more gentrified than some other college towns. Cute.

Campus Visit Notes for Carleton College

Visit Description:

Tour guides represented a diverse and articulate group of students. 2012 daughter was relieved to see and hear students that seemed more intellectual and unique than those she met at St Olaf but thought that these students seemed equally friendly as St Olaf's "nice" students. My 2014 son was standing outside the admissions office waiting for his older sister. Because he was wearing running shoes and his cross country shirt the Carleton cross country coach approached him and was very friendly towards him. The coach told him all about the Carleton course and training regime, complimented him on his running shoe brand choice and asked for his name. He probably would have kept talking to him if we weren't ready to leave.
