Visit Activities:

Information Session: Yes - Info session by a former Carleton grad who works in admissions, originally from Boston. Had some very funny things to say about Carleton( we were nerdy before it was cool to be nerdy) and Minnesota.

Campus Tour: Yes - Good tour. Library impressed, dining room food was excellent, grounds were charming. Admissions office was small and welcoming.Baseball field was decent but stands were laughably small.

Classroom Visit: Yes - Son said it was mainly lecturing in his smallish modern History class.

Son had two conversations with students afterwards. One a general conversation, the other with a player on the baseball team(S is a BB player, and had on some BB gear.

Friendliness/Courtesy of Staff:
"Minnesota nice" sums it up. Smart, kind, and helpful. Don't really have a single negative thing to say. And no, I don't work for the school.

Appearance of Campus:
4 - Very Good
4 - Very Good
Clean, nice lake/pond with bridges spanning it, and woods surrounding campus. Smaller scale buildings ranged from older to modern. Pleasant greenspaces. Most bldgs. are a 5 min. walk away.

Building/Facilities Maintenance/Cleanliness:

Everything very well kept up. Only "mess" was due to construction.

Dormitories:

Uninspiring, but functional.

Security/Safety:

Who knows for sure, but the local town is about as benign as it gets. This is not the sort of place where you need guards with sub machine guns, unless they are the kind that shoots nerf balls.

Overall Campus Impression:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
S, who tries hard not to be impressed by things and is interested in a more urban setting, was quietly impressed. Only downer was the BB field, which was out of the way and underwhelming.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:

Small, mildly charming country town. Not exciting, but safe and clean.

Campus Visit Notes for Carleton College

Visit Description:

For such a small school, the Library was very welcoming and impressive. I could see spending a lot of time in there comfortably. In general, we failed to find one pretentious person. Our tour group included people from LA, Chicago, and Atlanta. All seemed charmed by the school, from the admissions/front desk person to the dining hall workers. Seemed to be a mix of students. There were definitely students "of color", whether it be Indian, AA, Asian, etc, but there were also athletic types, slovenly just got out of bed types, low key, fit and smart types.

I would not call it a preppy place, nor one that has a lot of button down or glitzy types.

Genuine, maybe? There was a trace of desperation on the faces of a few...no doubt the procastinators among them worried about deadlines...it takes one to know one.
