Carleton College Visit Report by birdhouse
Admissions Interview: Yes - Nicely paced for a 20 minute interview. (Was in a hurry) Senior intern asked q's like which superhero did I related to the most, what my school was famous for, how my friends would describe me, e
Campus Tour: Yes - Tour guide was enthusiastic enough about Carleton. We walked into a random person's dorm room. People were generally friendly if approached.
Classroom Visit: Yes - 3 classes -- photography, European history, English. Photography had a lab day; history had an enthusiastic prof, but most students looked deep in thought and untalkative. English: a good discussion.
Campus Visit Notes for Carleton College
It was "screw your roommate" on the Friday night I stayed, so it was loud in the dorms that night. My host didn't go anywhere, but I thought she would so I wandered around campus in various activities. I went to the library (very impressive -- four floors, mostly underground, and large considering not many people were there), saw a play (like a couple other people mentioned, the theatre is very small and only one theatre major this year. The play wasn't that great, but it seemed like a cool place to try out acting for wannabes), and went to the science lecture hall to see a movie. I got the impression that Carleton has a lot of activities going on at the same time.
The Carleton kids....eh. In the classes I attended, about half the class was rather quiet during discussions. A few very talkative people. They're all fairly nerdy, though. Outside of class, Carls appeared busy with various activities.3
Also I met with a cinema prof, who emphasized the point of Carleton is to get a liberal arts education, not go into movies immediately. He wasn't so enthusiastic about Minnesota having a lot of opportunities, but he was happy to talk about the new arts center (they're remodeling an old middle school).
Carleton was almost everything I hoped it would be, though I was disappointed (rightfully so) that it wasn't very diverse ethnically.
The weather wasn't as cold as I thought.
I think I'm still applying, though I doubt I will attend...flying back and forth from California seems to be a lot of trouble to go to Carleton. I liked it, but maybe not enough to devote myself to flying often.

Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Ate at the Language and Dining Hall. Food choice was good; apparently they got a new food service this year, and the rumors of bad food are now untrue.
