Visit Activities:

Admissions Interview: Yes - DD felt her interview with an admission staffer to be the best she had all season. Interviewer was relaxed but inquisitive and really tried to assess the fit between Colby and her interests.

Information Session: Yes - The info. session was run by the Associate Dean and was one of the best one we attended. There was a lot of attention paid to academic topics and to increasing diversity and the international focus.

Campus Tour: Yes - The campus friendliness is palpable, students seem happy and know each other. Our tour guide was funny and well-informed.

4 - Very Good
The dorm room - a triple - we saw was fine but not luxurious, it was a little hard to assess the true space because it was messy! Par for the course. We saw an older dorm, but DD stayed in a newer dorm for a later visit and that seemed nicer.

Security/Safety:
5 - Excellent
5 - Excellent
The campus feels extremely safe and there is a blue light system to increase the feeling of safety.

Overall Campus Impression:

No category for campus food, which should be mentioned because it is excellent. Three venues for food: the food at Foss (vegetarian) and Roberts (classic cooking) are particularly good.

Off-Campus:

Area Immediately Around Campus:

The countryside is gorgeous and ideal for winter sports, hiking, boating on the nearby Belgrade Lakes. Your interests should revolve around the outdoors, there isn't much nightlife around. Freeport and LL Bean shopping are about 1 hour away.

City/Town/Community:
3 - Good

Waterville isn't a metropolis, but it has some cute restaurants. Got the impression that students spend most of their time on campus, except when they do volunteer activities in town.

Campus Visit Notes for Colby College

Visit Description:

This was the key visit that put Colby near the top of DD's colleges list. She had visited twice before, but this time school was in session and the full campus was in action. The sense of community is very real as you go across campus. It is the right place if you value peer connections and want to be part of a community. The friendliness of the students is often noted by visitors and that quality is very visible.
The academic environment is demanding but not cutthroat, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of value placed on competing against others.
