Harvey Mudd College Visit Report by ElphDriver
Information Session: Yes - Very good overviews, every question we had was answered. This was an admitted students two day program.
Campus Tour: Yes - Mudd itself is a fairly small campus, the shared Claremont campus is huge, I wished I could have seen more of it. A bike would have been handy.
Campus Visit Notes for Harvey Mudd College
We had a very good impression of Harvey Mudd from everything we had read and heard, and it all matched up when we visited. The academics are certainly there, and also the uniqueness of the student body. These kids study really, really hard, are well supported by the staff, and blow off steam in unique ways. You kind of get the idea that a specific type of kid is going to be attracted to this place, and keep the quirky momentum going.
I appreciated hearing about the support of the students' emotional health, since they really are in a bit of a pressure cooker academically - they actually have someone devoted specifically to that.
We attended a number of panels - graduating seniors (all going on to very good jobs or fellowships), procters (like resident assistants), faculty. All were very informative and kept confirming that this would be a great place to do undergraduate work. There was an unabashed honesty from all - they are very self-accepting of the heavy workload, the intensity, the smallness of the student body. Two very honest statements I heard: 1. yes sometimes the smallness gets claustrophobic and luckily there is a big campus of other kids. 2. I'm glad to be graduating and I probably will need a couple of years away to have any longing to come back (meaning he had thoroughly "DONE" the HM experience, and was ready to move on.)
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
We stayed at the Doubletree, very close to campus and very nice (plasma TV, ipod radio device, beautiful grounds, pool).
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
We ate at a sushi restaurant in the Village, it was okay.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Parking on campus can be difficult, you may have to hike a bit.
