Harvey Mudd College Visit Report by minz
Admissions Interview: Yes - I love my admission officer, she's so amazing. We come from similar backgrounds so we "clicked". But I really don't know what she thought of me.
Information Session: Yes - Same admission officer gave info session. She was happy and not at all monotonous.
Campus Tour: Yes - Campus tour was really good, there were only 5 student/parent groups. HMC is tiny, as you know, but we went through buildings and went down to see engineering shops.
Classroom Visit: No - I went during summer vacation.
Campus Visit Notes for Harvey Mudd College
I went with my mom and did not know what to expect from Mudd. We got lost so we went to get help from Pomona's admission office (where I saw prospective students in suits..). Mudd is at the far end so we were pretty tired when we got there.
Admission Office workers were really kind, and it was pretty scary knowing that these people will review my application starting next week. Anyway, I also saw this mom who tried to get connections with my admission officer, which kind of made me mad. (Really, can't your daughter/son do that on his/her own? Are you going to follow him/her when she/he goes to college?)
Yes - I saw students laughing! They were really helpful as I got lost trying to find a professor's office (she was doing some synthetic skin research). It's small, but it has so many rooms that it's kind of hard to keep track of where you are.
Students there are really inspiring, they're so brilliant and know what they want.
P.S. According to the professor I visited, she said Mudd might start a summer camp for students. I was somewhat disappointed because they don't have one right now and the girl (my age) who researched with her was able to do so because she had connections.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Double tree hotel is right there with the colleges, but we were cheap and stayed at Howard Johnson (about 30-40 minute slow walk to Mudd)... it's near the freeway btw.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Mudd's lunch is $6/person. We ate outside the village and found Walgreens, a doughnut shop, subway, a gas station along the way. Good enough for a 2-day visit.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
We rode AMTRAK, but I know that metrolink (eh, whatever it's called) also stops in front of the colleges.
