Harvey Mudd College Visit Report by esobay
Admissions Interview: Yes - Student interviewer was just finishing training, so adcom observed. DS said that was good because he got to sell 2 for 1. At least he knew what he was there for.
Information Session: Yes - We did it last year ... well, in Feb, but last school year so it feels like ages ago. It is not as generic as some. HMC is small and the info session felt more intimate
Classroom Visit: Yes - DS attended 3 classes
Campus Visit Notes for Harvey Mudd College
H's remarks .....
It's really striking walking through all the other Claremont colleges
to get to HMC. All of the others are beautiful. Mudd is ugly. They
all have really interesting and original architecture, including the
dorms. Mudd has concrete bunkers, even to the point of putting
several "buildings" underground. At least three of the other colleges
have a large "commons" park-like area (much bigger then the park at
the edge of Scripps we saw last night), with huge trees lining a wide
expanse of grass. Mudd has scuffy grass between the concrete bunker
dorms with a few saplings. They built the dorms in 1957. Couldn't
they have put in a few trees at the time? It could have been
beautiful by now.
There was no one in the pizza place under the student center (though
there were about 20-30 students in the lounge on the ground floor).
The two pool tables look like they've never been used.
Maybe Mudd would suit DS, but IMO it's exactly what gives nerds a
bad reputation. No guts to ask for anything beyond what they need to
work, and no interest in anything but work anyway. It really is a
1950's cold war Soviet engineer factory.
Hotel/Lodging Recommendations or Comments:
Casa 425, waking distance to all 5 colleges and lots of food. Free bikes.
