Mount Holyoke College Visit Report by phanatic
Admissions Interview: Yes - My interview was with a student who seemed stiff and uncomfortable. She had a list of questions to ask and barreled through them. She seemed to be spitting out the party lines of the college.
Campus Tour: Yes - We didn't have a formal one, but we drove and walked around the campus. It's lovely.
Campus Visit Notes for Mount Holyoke College
I was prepared to be impressed by MHC, I really was. It had been my first choice college for a while, but I wasn't pleased by what I saw. I'm sure my experiences aren't typical (or at least, I hope), but I should state them.
The admissions office felt cold, and the staff seemed a little reluctant to help. The interviewer didn't seem to facilitate a conversation, as other interviewers at other colleges had done, but asked her questions and seemed to rush through. She kept repeating a few things about the college but didn't offer anything new when I asked.
MHC students didn't seem very happy. I never saw any of them smiling, with the exception of the tour guide for another tour. They all walked from point A to point B and were not happy to see visitors on the green or taking pictures of academic buildings. Maybe I just came at a bad time.
My mother commented that it felt like Mount Holyoke was "full of itself" and that the admissions office was "trying too hard to impress." I thought it felt like a prep school, and my father deemed it "pretentious."
I have an ordered college list, and Mount Holyoke was once number one. It is now number seven. I'm disappointed with my campus visit, and hope that it wasn't typical of others.
Dining/Restaurant Recommendations or Comments:
Drive to Amherst. Go to Antonio's. You won't regret it.
I also recommend ThirstyMind coffee house.
Other Comments (Transportation, local attractions, parking, etc.):
Parking is great behind the village commons or whatever the new strip mall is called.
